Redwood City
The City of Redwood City
Redwood City, a diverse town affectionately known for its slogan, "Climate Best by Government Test", is located approximately 27 miles south of San Francisco and 24 miles northwest of San Jose. The home of both the County Seat of San Mateo County and the only deep water port in the Bay, Redwood City has a land area of 19.4 square miles and a population of just over 75,000.
Redwood City stretches east to west from the San Francisco Bay to Woodside, with San Carlos and Atherton establishing its north and south borders. The city is graced with several desirable communities and varied geography, from contemporary neighborhoods along the Bay to hilly enclaves on the west side approaching Highway 280. Each is distinguished by a slightly different aesthetic and vibe. Bair Island and Redwood Shores are located along the Bay and northeast of Highway 101. Further inland, the quiet, idyllic neighborhoods of Woodside Plaza, Mount Carmel, Emerald Hills and Horgan Ranch are appealing to young families and retirees alike. A community on the upswing with property values climbing accordingly, Redwood City is a destination for both startup companies and big business headquarters including Oracle, Box, Electronic Arts and Equinix.
Redwood City’s Downtown has been reimagined with plenty of new development, including modern lofts popular with young professionals. Evolving into one of the trendiest corridors on the Peninsula, the main drag is dotted with the popular Fox and Century Theatres, the historic county courthouse, Peet’s, Starbucks, Young’s Ice Cream and plenty of eclectic shopping and dining destinations. Whole Foods, World Market and the Redwood City Caltrain stop are located just a stone’s throw away, and Sequoia Station offers a plethora of amenities in a single shopping center. The much-loved Independence Day parade and fireworks show are favorites throughout the community. The energetic city departments are always at work to provide a variety of arts, culture and entertainment experiences for Redwood City residents.
In addition to over 30 beautifully maintained city parks, Redwood City is bordered by stunning open space preserves including Edgewood County Park to the west, with Bair Island Ecological Preserve and Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge to the east. Self-described as the best deal in town, Redwood City’s Parks and Recreation Department prides itself in providing a myriad of recreation and leisure opportunities for residents of all ages. Public spaces include a thriving community center, community pool, baseball and soccer fields and a skate park constantly abuzz with the variety of offerings provided by the city.
